Data Streaming

All Glossary Terms

Data streaming is the processing of data in real-time, as soon as it is generated, on a record-by-record basis. This allows for live monitoring of important information, enabling businesses to respond quickly when necessary. Examples of data streams include social media activity, online video game activity, and information on financial trading floors. Data streaming is contrasted with batch processing, where large amounts of data are processed together at times when computing resources are experiencing low demand, such as at the end of the day.
